Competitive Athletics

UAlberta is home to the Golden Bears (men’s) and Pandas (women’s) competitive sports teams.

UAlberta is the only school in Canada to have won a national championships in all 11 team sports—we hold 60 national titles. Also, UAlberta ranks second on the academic All-Canadian list of students who are national all-stars in their sport and in the classroom.

We are the only school with such a high number of Academic All-Canadians and national championships. 

  • Most Golden Bears and Pandas teams are a part of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) organization and compete against other CIS teams in Canada. UAlberta is also a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and competes in the Royal Canadian Golf Association.
  • Golden Bears and Pandas teams include hockey, basketball, volleyball, soccer, golf, rugby, tennis, track and field, wrestling, swimming, football, curling, and cross-country. Tryout dates are listed on the Bears and Pandas Athletics website.
  • Attending a U of A sports event is a great way to meet new people and cheer on our athletes! Come and join us, along with our mascots: GUBA, the Great University Bear of Alberta, and Patches the Panda. 
  • UAlberta's athletic facilities rank among the best in Canada and offer gymnasiums, running tracks, climbing walls, ice rinks, pools, indoor courts, dance studios, and more.
